Molecular Spectroscopy History
This timeline outlines the development of Shimadzu's Spectroscopy products over the past 150 years. Each entry reflects Shimadzu's commitment to advancing sensitivity, speed, and usability in analytical chemistry. From the introduction of the first Spectroscopy system to the latest innovations, Shimadzu has made significant contributions to various fields, including pharmaceutical research, proteomics, and environmental analysis.
In 1952, Shimadzu completed the first UV-Vis spectrophotometer system, the QB-50. The system used a crystal prism as a spectroscopic element and was the first UV-Vis spectrophotometer in the world with a photomultiplier tube used as the detector.
Double Beam Self-Recording Infrared Spectrophotometer. The model number "275" was taken from the focal length of the collimator mirror used in the monochromator.
Lauch of the double-beam UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The RS-20 represents the starting point for Shimadzu's current line of double-beam spectrophotometers, which is now one of the main product lines at Shimadzu.
The IR-27G was the 1st infrared spectrophotometer developed by Shimadzu that used diffraction gratings for the diffraction element, and represented a substantial improvement in terms of instrument maintenance.
Shimadzu's UV-365 UV-VIS-NIR Spectrophotometer. It was the first UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer equipped with a microprocessor, which were gaining widespread popularity at the time.
Double Beam Self-Recording Infrared Spectrophotometer. This was Shimadzu's 1st double beam self-recording infrared spectrophotometer to come with a built-in microcomputer.
Dual-Wavelength Double-Beam Recording Spectrophotometer using a microprocessor and had a measurement wavelength range from 190 nm to 900 nm.
The FTIR-4000 model shown was Shimadzu's 1st Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer.
UV-160 UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, an all-in-one double-beam spectrophotometer that included a CRT screen, keypad, printer, and other functionality all integrated in a single unit
This was the last model of Shimadzu's dispersive infrared spectrophotometers. The era of FTIR has already started
Reductions in the size and price of FTIR spectrophotometers continued, and in 1990 Shimadzu launched the FTIR-8100 Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer.
Dual-beam UV-Vis spectrophotometer with integrated LCD display and numerous software functions for improved user-friendliness.
This automatic infrared microscope opened the door of FTIR micro sample analysis with its X-Y stage and maintenance free MCT detector.
FTIR with Michaelson type interferometer and dynamic alignment as standard.
IRPrestige-21 offered high sensitivity (S/N: 40,000:1) and expanded functionality by IRsolution software .
It included Automatic Accessory Recognition for User Friendly operation.
The SolidSpec-3700i/3700i DUV have three detectors which cover the range from ultraviolet to near-infrared and can handle by an automatic xy table samples up to 12 inch or 310 x 310mm.
Double Beam UV-Vis Spectrophotometer using the Czerny-Turner mounting for its monochromator, It worked as stand alone or by PC control and was already USB flash drive ready.
The successor of IRPrestige 21 achieves excellent sensitivity, high resolution at 0.25 cm-1, and high-speed scanning capable of 20 spectra/second.
The AIM-9000 FTIR infrared microscope featured several user-friendly functions, such as easy measurement range determination via a wide-field camera, automatic identification of measurement targets, and many more assuring that both beginners and specialists can feel confident from the very first analysis.
The IRXross creates a new concept for FTIR spectroscopy. It offers the optimal solution for a new era with diverse application requirements. This new mid-level FTIR model achieves high-end S/N levels.
An extremely compact FTIR spectrophotometers, which can still be used with standard accessories from Shimadzu and other manufacturers. Now with 10 year warranty available (option). You can choose from the highly sensitive IRSpirit-TX, the affordable IRSpirit-LX, and the highly reliable IRSpirit-ZX with its moisture-resistant design.
Shimadzu's first Raman and FTIR Microscope. The new AIRsight is a unique microscope that combines both FTIR and Raman spectroscopy into a single instrument, offering complementary molecular information on the same micrometer sample spot.
Latest Double Beam UV-Vis Spectrophotometer with ultra fast scan mode of up to 29,000 nm/min, working as stand alone or by PC control of LabSolutions UV.
Throughout its 150-year history, Shimadzu has gathered numerous stories that exemplify its role in the advancement of analytical technology. Each narrative reflects the contributions of individuals and the evolution of innovations across various fields. Below, we present some of these stories that highlight key milestones in our journey and the impact they have had.
Products made of acrylic glass have become an integral part of our everyday lives – from watch crystals to submarine pressure hulls. Hopefully, those transparent screen dividers from the pandemic are forever a thing of the past. Depending on whether a crystal-clear view or frosted glass is required: The cloudiness of acrylic glass is defined as its “haze value”, which is determined according to the ASTM D 1003.
Real butter, clarified butter, and margarine are all indispensable to fine cuisine. The EU strictly regulates what can be included in each type of spreadable fat. In food analysis, molecular spectroscopy can be used to quickly determine whether the food contains what it should according to the regulations – and without prior chemical analysis preparation.
The northern fulmar – a type of petrel – is widespread throughout the North Sea region. The bird eats practically everything it finds on the sea surface – including a lot of plastic waste. This makes it interesting for research. Most countries along the North Sea report annually on developments in the amount and composition of plastic in fulmar stomachs and exchange information at regular workshops.
